Who we are and what we do!
Indigo are based in Kent, and are made up of formally trained vocalist Sarah Williams accompanied by fingerstyle guitarist Richard Millns. (click on our photos to the right to see our individual biographies).
We met in 2012 and despite being a musical ‘odd couple’ in terms of background and influences soon found that our respective styles of singing and playing were perfectly in tune. We formed Indigo soon after and worked hard to perfect a repertoire of almost 50 songs within 6 months before playing live for the first time in early 2013, performing at our first wedding bookings soon after.
We love the moment when we receive an enquiry from a newly engaged couple- mainly because as music lovers ourselves we are always curious to see what music they have chosen! We have been asked for some beautiful songs that we never would have thought of. If we don’t already know that special song for the couple we will learn it for them at no extra cost, and send over a quick video of us performing it so we know they are happy with it.
We spend a lot of time helping couples with their music choices for their wedding, advising them on issues such as timings to suit the processional, the legal issues surrounding songs with religious references during civil ceremonies, or the tempo of a song to suit their first dance. If we are performing during the drinks reception we ask the couple to choose some songs from our repertoire and we build a setlist around their choices.
Both of us are advanced performers and private tutors on our respective instruments, and both of us have an eclectic taste in music. That enables us to think outside the box in terms of the music we play, so as well as the well-loved wedding classics, we will perform versions of diverse material such as modern chart songs, soul, jazz and reggae songs to get toes tapping and the guests singing along. For both of us, this has been the widest repertoire of any band we have performed in.
It is a huge privilege to perform during a wedding and we take the responsibility very seriously. As musicians there is simply no greater honour than performing that special song as a bride walks down the aisle, or as they have that first glass of champagne as husband and wife with their family and friends during the reception. We believe music is a huge and important part of any wedding, we live for that ‘hairs on the back of the neck’ moment when we play the right song at the right time, and we both feel incredibly blessed to be a part of the couples’ day.
